Montana faces one of the most acute rural health crises in the nation. 89% of rural hospitals operate at negative margins, 30+ counties have zero psychotherapy providers, and Medicare patient out-migration from rural communities exceeds 40% in many service areas — meaning rural Montanans travel hundreds of miles for care that should be available locally.
A&M has created this prototype platform as an illustration of the type of analytics we can provide to the State of Montana. Please note that this is not a final deliverable by any means — it is a starting point. We have incorporated a wide variety of publicly available data sources to populate these dashboards. We will work collaboratively with the State to define the scope, structure, and priorities of the site, and will update the data with state-supplied information and data provided directly from healthcare providers.
The RHTP Center of Excellence integrates data from CMS cost reports, CDC PLACES, CMS Market Saturation, and Hospital Service Area files to give state planners, CoE analysts, and rural health leaders a unified view of where demand exceeds supply, where financial viability is at risk, and where workforce gaps are most severe.
